Kite and Stand Up Paddleboard racing was on display this weekend at Delnor Wiggins State Park where the BEST True Blue Kite/SUP Extravaganza and Race was held.

The action began on Saturday with the Stand Up Paddlers competing in an Elite 5 Mile event and a Recreational 3 Mile event.  Packet Casey of Ft. Lauderdale, the top ranked paddle racer in the State of Florida again pace the competition with local Mark Athanacio finishing second.  Also on the podium was True Blue Team Rider, Bill Quinsey, who finished third.  Frank Dillenburg of Tampa won the Elite 14’ class.

The winner of the men’s Recreational 3 mile paddle was Cory Neilson with Reid Nelson finishing second and local Noodle’s Restaurateur, Matt Berman finishing third.

The women’s Elite division was dominated by Helga Goebel of Ft. Lauderdale, with True Blue team rider, Mindy Quinsey, finishing the five mile paddle in second with a time just over an hour.

The Women’s recreational winner was Naples local Jen Hayes.  Sharon Dillenburg finished second with Donna Montgomery finding her way to the podium in her first race.

On Sunday, the wind prevailed and kiters wowed the crowd with their aerials and speed.  Winning the Pro Division of the course race was Ryan Nel from Capetown, South Africa.  True Blue Team riders Nick Shirghio and Adam Lehman swept first and second  in the Amateur Division with Mark Athanacio of Naples Park finishing third.  Deb Jackson of Jupiter won the women’s course racing event in record time.

Concluding this weekend was the Free-Style event with Ryan Evans of Cape Hatteras, NC winning the Pro division with a variety of hooked and unhooked tricks.  High flyer and Team True Blue rider Nick Shirghio topped the podium in the amateur division wowing the crowd with an  amplitude clearly superior to the competition.  True Blue team rider, Patrick Rhea, finished second with Shaun Jackson of Jupiter, taking the bronze.
